My heart dropped in the pit of my belly, and I backed up into the fence, my spine pressing into the wire.

“Arson?” I repeated, lifting my hand to my chest as a ripple of anxiety passed through me.

The security guard reached out, grabbing my forearm. “Are you okay, ma’am?”

“Yeah,” I breathed. “I’m just a little light-headed. I haven’t eaten all morning.”

“Well, you should get out of here. Get you something to eat. There’s nothing more here. Cleanup crew will take care of everything,” he said.

“Are they sure that someone intentionally set the fire?” I pressed.

“That’s what the cops said. There were three of them here earlier. They’ve since left.” He put his hands on his hips. “Anyway, I’m not allowed to let anyone back past the tape. That includes the former residents.” He cleared his throat. “And you.”

“I know. I just hadn’t heard anything and I was curious. Landlord hasn’t been answering his phone either.”

“Well, that sucks. They should’ve definitely let you know what was going on. You should at least reach out to your insurance company.”

I looked down at the ground.

“You did have rental insurance, right?”

“Ummm … yeah. Look, who do I contact about this arson thing? You said there were two cops here.”

The security guard shrugged. “I don’t know. You could ride down to the local precinct. Maybe they’ll fill you in. Since this was a crime, I don’t know how much they can tell you though.”

“You’re right.”

“Sorry about that. Wish I could help more.”

Suddenly, something caught the guard’ s eye on the far side of the property. “I’m sorry, ma’am. Gotta go. Look at those kids trying to cut through here again.” He started backing away while reaching for his walkie. “Arnie? Come in.”

“Yeah, okay …”

I turned around just in time to see a black shadow disappear behind a tree. Freezing in my tracks near the fence, I peered out through the gate.

How odd. Then again, it wasn’t so odd after all. A freaking vampire had attacked me in this city just last week. Something else could’ve been after me. After all, magical beings attracted other magical beings. It was one reason why places like Capital City didn’t take too kindly to people like me living here.

However, I was good at hiding my power. I had a lot of time and practice doing it.

But my newly returned dark magic …

Well, that was a different story.

I hadn’t used it yet, so there shouldn’t have been any traces of dark essences anywhere on me.

I pushed open the gate and reversed the magic which resealed the chains. I felt bad for breaking inside of the fence the way I did, but at least I got something out of it.

Who would intentionally set a fire to some apartment buildings knowing innocent people might be inside?

As I strolled down the sidewalk to reach my car which was parked across the street in the adjacent parking garage, a black squad car pulled up in front of the fenced in area. But not just any squad car.
